Steampunk is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that combines technology and aesthetic design inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although the literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often arranged in alternative history from the 19th-century British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a future where steam power maintains general use, or in a fantasy world which also uses steam. However, steampunk and neo-Victoria differ because the neo-Victoria movement does not extrapolate technology while technology is a key aspect of steampunk.
Steampunk also refers to artistic styles and fashions, or subcultures that developed from the aesthetic of steampunk fiction, Victorian era fiction, art nouveau designs, and films from the mid-20th century. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modified by individual craftsmen into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and music artists are described as steampunk.
