I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, Mahaguru for Bali Traditional Minimalism Painting

I Gusti Nyoman Lempad was a Balinese artist of many tags, painter, stone carver, master maker paraphernalia, spiritualist and designer for traditional ritual. He was said to be the Balinese artist with longest lifetime, about 116 years.

The painting look very minimalist in comparison with traditional painting in general. His idea and theme mostly about Ramayana-Mahabrata scene, folklore, some time about daily routine family activity and vulgar erotic visual.
Lempad made great constributions to Balines painting. Among them, in 1936 he had share in the founding of the Pita Maha art organization together with Rudolf Bonnet, Walter Spies, and Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati.
Sharp line and grayish tone made his painting and drawing so light and minimalize, his character figure dashing and mesmerizing. Abstraction and unity of figure in great composition. Lempad’s works collected at Museum Puri Lukisan, Ubud Bali, Taman Budaya Denpasar Bali, Tropenmuseum Amsterdam, and Rijksacademy, and Basel Museum.
