Instead of competing with or complementing nature, Cattedrale Vegetale (or Tree Cathedral) is built by this Italian artist Giuliano Mauri. With his Cathedral, he makes it as a perfect example of architecture that show the world that a building doesn’t have to be a dry and dead thing. His epic Cathedral became the artist’s two groves of trees which are destined to grow into a pair of magnificent basilicas.
As seen here, the framework columns in these photos eventually rot away and decay. But Mauri could then replace them with the hornbeam trees planted in the center of each frame.
As such hornbeam trees grow, their canopies will mesh together to form the vaulted ceiling of a Gothic cathedral.
Even though Mauri passed away in 2009, he already laid the groundwork for his first visionary cathedral in Valsugana, Italy in 2002.
