When looking at those luxury labels like Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino or Ralph & Russo, artist Chan Clayrene began to have inspirations to create her piece. And to make her creations she uses both matte and sparkly nail polishes as in her glamorous illustrations of haute couture gowns. While for her watercolor art, it is very dreamlike in texture since the edges seem to evaporate into the blankness of the paper. In fact, her bold color seems to dominate thank to the vivacious hues of her nail polish palette.
This effect doesn’t sound surprising, knowing that many of her fashionable illustrations involve drawings, sometimes she even presents real flowers that burst from the page to give impression of 3D influence.
As Clayrene creates her own artwork, she says, “Nail polish is one of my favorite cosmetics, I love them because of its glossy shine effect; an aesthetic she has taken from nails to the page.”
Although she has affinity for the medium, using nail polish in place of watercolors is not always easy. She says, “The process of drawing on water is very challenging but exciting. I could ruin my artwork anytime with a wrong stroke! Hence, it just feels like making a wish in the wishing well and the dream comes true once the artwork is completed. Through this art journey, it motivates me to dare to dream, to always inspire and to be an inspiration for others.”
